Acts: Reboot #5

Posted 2/10/2019

Sunday Morning Sermon Series by Pastor Lee Evans

Acts: Reboot#5 Acts 2:1-13

1  When the day of Pentecost had arrived, they were all together in one place. 2  Suddenly a sound like that of a violent rushing wind came from heaven, and it filled the whole house where they were staying. 3  They saw tongues like flames of fire that separated and rested on each one of them. 4  Then they were all filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in different tongues, as the Spirit gave them ability for speech. 5  Now there were Jews staying in Jerusalem, devout people from every nation under heaven. 6  When this sound occurred, a crowd came together and was confused because each one heard them speaking in his own language.
7  They were astounded & amazed, saying, "Look, aren't all these who are speaking Galileans? 8  How is it that each of us can hear them in our own native language? 9  Parthians, Medes, Elamites; those who live in Mesopotamia, in Judea & Cappadocia, Pontus & Asia, 10  Phrygia & Pamphylia, Egypt & the parts of Libya near Cyrene; visitors from Rome (both Jews & converts), 11  Cretans & Arabs—we hear them declaring the magnificent acts of God in our own tongues." 12  They were all astounded & perplexed, saying to one another, "What does this mean?" 13  But some sneered & said, "They're drunk on new wine."

1. Background of Pentecost, Lev. 23:15-22

  • Pentecost means 50.  It is also called the Feast of Weeks; Feast of Harvest.
  • It was one of the three pilgrimage Feast men were required to attend in Jerusalem (Deut. 16:16)
  • It was tied to the giving of the Ten Commandments (the Old Covenant) God gave through Moses.

2. Background of the Holy Spirit (in the O. T.)

  • The Spirit of God was present at Creation, Gen. 1:2
Now the earth was formless and empty, darkness covered the surface of the watery depths, and the Spirit of God was hovering over the surface of the waters. Genesis 1:2 (CSB)
  • The Spirit of God was present at Creation, Gen. 1:2
  • The Spirit would “come upon” a person for a specific task for a time and then leave.  (Balaam, Num. 24:2; Othniel, Judg. 3:10; Samson, Judges 13:25; 14:19; 15:14;16:20)
  • God’s prophets foretold of a new day that would come. (Jer. 31:31-34; Ezek. 36: 25-27; 37:14; Joel 2:28-32)
I will give you a new heart and put a new spirit within you; I will remove your heart of stone and give you a heart of flesh.  27  I will place my Spirit within you and cause you to follow my statutes and carefully observe my ordinances. Ezekiel 36:26-27

3. A Divine Reboot Occurred at Pentecost!

  • For almost 1500 years the Israelites had observed this Feast… Now, God fulfilled what He had promised - He sent His Spirit!  Ezek. 36:25-27
  • God’s Spirit came “ON” them, Acts 2:3; Rom. 8:9; 1 Cor. 12:13; Gal. 3:2-6, 27,28. (The one-time Baptism of 1:4)

“They saw tongues like flames of fire that separated and rested on each one of them.”  Acts 2:3 (CSB)

  • God’s Spirit “filled them” 2: 4 (came to live IN, to dwell in ALL of the believers; (John 14:16,17; 15:26; 16:7-15; 1 Cor. 6:19,20; 2 Cor. 6:16; Eph. 5:18)

Then they were all filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in different tongues… Acts 2:4 (CSB)

  • God’s Spirit worked THRU them, (4:4-14; 1:8) to make them witnesses!

Conclusion

  • Is the Holy Spirit Speaking to You Today?
  • Is He Convicting YOU of your sin? John 16:8-11/Rom. 3:23; 6:23)
  • Is He showing  you that you need a “new birth”?  John 3:3,6
  • If you are already a believer, what is He saying to You? Are you allowing the “indwelling” Spirit to do God’s work IN you and THRU you?
