Reboot: Questions about the Church

Acts 2:40-47

40  With many other words he testified & strongly urged them, saying, "Be saved from this corrupt generation!" 41  So those who accepted his message were baptized, & that day about three thousand people were added to them. 42  They devoted themselves to the apostles' teaching, to the fellowship, to the breaking of bread, & to prayer. 43  Everyone was filled with awe, & many wonders & signs were being performed through the apostles. 44  Now all the believers were together & held all things in common…

45  They sold their possessions & property & distributed the proceeds to all, as any had need. 46  Every day they devoted themselves to meeting together in the temple, & broke bread from house to house. They ate their food with joyful & sincere hearts, 47  praising God & enjoying the favor of all the people. Every day the Lord added to their number those who were being saved.

What is the Church?

  • Those “saved from this corrupt generation” v. 40
  • Those who accepted his message (Repent!) and were baptized, v. 41
  • Those devoted to the apostle’s doctrine (teaching); the fellowship (partnership, sharing); breaking of bread (the Lord’s Supper); and prayer (v. 42)

Why the Church?

  • Those born out of this generation, need to be with other believers! Even Saul needed others (Acts 9:19,25,26-28).
  • The scoffers of Acts 2:12, grew (4:1,18; 5:17,28; 7:54-60; 8:1-4) into organized persecution (John 15:18-21).
  • We need one another in order to thrive (Acts 2:1,44,46; 4:24; 5:12), & maybe to survive as believers (9:25, 29,30)

You and the Church…

  • Joining a church is more than just attending it’s about a Spiritual birth (John 3:5-6; 1 Cor. 12:13).
  • Baptism does not save, but it is important to publicly identify yourself with Christ (Matt. 28:19-20) & His church (Matt. 16:18).
  • Don’t settle for shallow, superficial “fellowship” with God or His church! Get in a small group; learn to give of Yourself to a cause bigger than yourself!

Reboot: Why Church?

“…Christ loved the church and gave himself for her…” Ephesians 5:25
