Sunday Morning Sermons by Pastor Lee Evans

Engaging Together In the Work…

2 Timothy 2:1-2 (CSB)

1  You, therefore, my son, be strong in the grace that is in Christ Jesus. 2  What you have heard from me in the presence of many witnesses, commit to faithful men who will be able to teach others also.

Matthew 28:19-20 (CSB)

19  Go, therefore, and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, 20  teaching them to observe everything I have commanded you. And remember, I am with you always, to the end of the age."

If we are going to Engage Together in the Work…

1. What is the Work?

•Jesus gave us His Example and the Left us with His command – “Make disciples…” Matt. 28:19-20
•Words used to describe Jesus followers:

“Christian” – 3  times  Acts 11:26

“Believer(s)” – 3/4 times  Acts 5:14

“Disciple(s)” – 260+ times

2. What is a Disciple?

• A Student - 2 Tim. 2:2; Matt. 28:20
• A Follower – who is attached to the teacher (Matt. 4:18-22;  John 3:3-6);  following the teaching (John 8:31) & becoming like the teacher.. (Luke 6:40).
•A Teacher, Witness – Matt. 28:20; Acts 1:8
•Let’s Think About This…
•Disciple Making is the Work God has Commanded His Children to do… (US)
•Being  Disciples means being a Student of Jesus Word SO that we can better share Him with others!
•Let’s Think About This…
•Being a Disciple Maker means building relationships with  and FOR the purpose of introducing someone to Christ AND teaching  them His Word so they become His Disciple!
•A Disciple of Jesus Follows, OBEYS, His Teaching  & is making Progress in Becoming Like Him!

3. Jesus’ Demands for His Disciples…

•Luke 14:26 "If anyone comes to Me and does not hate his father and mother, wife and children, brothers and sisters, yes, and his own life also, he cannot be My disciple.
•Luke 14:27  And whoever does not bear his cross and come after Me cannot be My disciple.
•Luke 14:33   So likewise, whoever of you does not forsake all that he has cannot be My disciple.

Conclusion:

•There IS a cost to being a disciple.
•You CANNOT do it alone.
•GOD NEVER INTENDED FOR YOU TO DO IT ALONE… His Spirit is in you (John 14-16; Romans 8; Acts 1:8)!
• Who can YOU; will YOU; invite to join you in the journey of following Jesus?

Who is a Disciple of Jesus?

•One with Unrivaled Devotion for Jesus, Luke 14:26
•One with Unceasing Determination to Follow Jesus, Luke 14:27
•One with Unreserved Surrender to Jesus, Luke 14:33
•One who Faithfully  Deploys to Disciple others… 2 Tim. 2:2; Matt. 28:20; Titus 2:4
