Sunday Morning Message by Pastor Lee Evans

Overcoming Deception

Ephesians 6:10-12

Finally, be strengthened by the Lord and by his vast strength.  Put on the full armor of God so that you can stand against the schemes of the devil.  For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the cosmic powers of this darkness, against evil, spiritual forces in the heavens.

Review:

  • The devil, satan, “the god of this age” is at work to “steal, kill and destroy…” our Society; the church; the family and YOU!
  • He wants to keep you out of the Word of God; the armor of God & the church!
  • It is our work to Engage the World together as disciples of Jesus, We MUST be aware of the enemies ways…

1. The Deceiver’s Methods are Not Random

"For such people are false apostles, deceitful workers, disguising themselves as apostles of Christ.  And no wonder! For Satan disguises himself as an angel of light.   So it is no great surprise if his servants also disguise themselves as servants of righteousness...” 2 Cor.  11:13-15

“…our temptations are not random. The false perspectives we encounter do not come at us haphazardly. The lies we hear, the conflicts we have with others, the cravings that consume us when we are at our weakest points – they are all part of a plan to make us casualties…” Chip Ingram , p. 27

  • NKJV – “wiles”; CSB & ESV – “schemes”; NLT – “strategies”; Greek – “methodeias”
  • Method  “the following or pursuing of an orderly & technical procedure in the handling of a subject.”
  • He, the devil, conceals his true identity!

“For such people are false apostles, deceitful workers, disguising themselves as apostles of Christ.  And no wonder! For Satan disguises himself as an angel of light.  So it is no great surprise if his servants also disguise themselves as servants of righteousness...” 2 Cor.  11:13-15

2. Some of His Destructive Ways…

  • He uses People - 2 Thes. 2:3
  • Outside  the church (1 John 4:5-6); & Inside the church (Matt. 24:5; Rom. 16:18; Gal. 1:6-7; 2 Cor. 11:14-15)
  • An angel from heaven (Gal. 1:8)
  • Even Friends or Family (Matt. 10:37; 16: 17,23; 24:10-12; Rom. 16:18).
  • We deceive Ourselves!  (I John 1:8; James 1:22; 1 Cor. 3:18). Satan’s favorite word is  I

“We need to realize that blatant, immoral evil is no worse than a self-centered life. All rebellion against God and living for self deprives God of His glory and is contrary to His will! The exaltation of self and disobedience characterize Satan.” ~Jerry Rankin, (Spiritual Warfare, p. 31)

  • Sin – Rom. 7:11; 2 Cor. 2:10-11

Don't be deceived: God is not mocked. For whatever a person sows he will also reap, Gal. 6:7

  • Discouragement –  ”Haven't I commanded you: be strong and courageous? Do not be afraid or discouraged, for the LORD your God is with you wherever you go." Joshua 1:9
  • Fear – 2 Tim. 1:7; Matt. 10:24-30
