Reboot: The Church Going!

Sunday Morning Sermon Series by Pastor Lee Evans

Reboot: The Church Going!

Acts 8:1-6

1  Saul agreed with putting him to death. On that day a severe persecution broke out against the church in Jerusalem, and all except the apostles were scattered throughout the land of Judea and Samaria. 2  Devout men buried Stephen and mourned deeply over him. 3  Saul, however, was ravaging the church. He would enter house after house, drag off men and women, and put them in prison. 4  So those who were scattered went on their way preaching the word. 5  Philip went down to a city in Samaria and proclaimed the Messiah to them. 6  The crowds were all paying attention to what Philip said, as they listened and saw the signs he was performing.

The Church Going!

Acts 8 focuses on the church, which had been growing, maturing, organizing and serving, but  NOW we see the church GOING outside of the walls of Jerusalem, into Judea & even into Samaria! (Acts 1:8)

Acts 8 introduces us to four men: Saul the persecutor, to Philip the Evangelist;  Simon, was he a Con man or Convert & the Ethiopian Eunuch.

The growing tension between the Jewish leaders and uneasiness of Roman authorities, exploded into full fledged persecution… Deut. 32:11

God stirs our nest when…

…He is ready for us to move to a new phase of growth & maturity. God stirs the nest, bringing discomfort to our comfort zones. He stirs a nest of our own making when we are in bad company, heading to a temptation that will catch us unawares if we fail to move with His stirring. He stirs the nest of those who settle into a comfort zone that we feel insecure & inadequate to leave; or one we feel accomplished in, not being ready to stop what we are doing. God forces us to leave a nest in order to teach us to fly in new directions, soaring to ever-greater heights of faith & effective ministry. He stirs the nest to wake us to ever-increasing depths of His love & faithfulness.

1. The Church Persecuted

  • It was Severe – They were followed; pressured; pursued with hostility & violence… “Saul… was ravaging the church…He would…drag off men AND women…” v. 3
  • Saul was a chief persecutor, v. 3, Acts 22:4; 26:10.  Saul was there at Stephen’s stoning and here he is again mentioned as a chief instigator…

2. The Church Scattered, v. 1, 4

  • The Dispersion – Matt. 13/ Mark 4/Isa. 55:11
This word is used to describe a farmer “sowing seeds & scattering or broadcasting it on soil...”
  • What was intended for evil God turned into good:   Gen. 50:20; Rom. 8:28 ; Acts 1:8

20  You intended to harm me, but God intended it all for good. He brought me to this position so I could save the lives of many people. Genesis 50:20 (NLT2)

Is God stirring Your Nest?

He has brought you here today to DRAW you to Himself…

He wants to Save you out of your Sin…

He wants to make you more useable for His Kingdom & purposes…

LISTEN TO HIS SPIRITS CALL… don’t turn away!

3. The Church on Mission

  • Evangelizing  - to announce, proclaim good news! Acts 8:4,12,25, 35,40. They were speaking with a PURPOSE – to tell people about Jesus!
  • They were not quiet, they were bold witnesses! Matt. 28:19-20; Acts 1:8; Phil. 1:12-14

Lessons We Can Learn from this Passage…

God allows our nest to be stirred to draw us to Himself… His purposes… A new work He wants to do in & through us… (What is He saying to YOU?)

God CAN & WILL make good out of what we at times see as BAD… WHEN we submit to Him. (Prov. 3:5,6)

Have you let other loves come before your love for Jesus and telling others about HIM? (1 John 1:9; Rev. 2:5)

Do you need to come to the Savior today?
