Sermon Series from Acts:Reboot by Pastor Lee Evans

Reboot: What’s Next?

Acts 9:19-30

Acts 9:19-30

19  And after taking some food, he regained his strength. Saul was with the disciples in Damascus for some time.  20  Immediately he began proclaiming Jesus in the synagogues: "He is the Son of God." 21  All who heard him were astounded & said, "Isn't this the man in Jerusalem who was causing havoc for those who called on this name & came here for the purpose of taking them as prisoners to the chief priests?“ 22  But Saul grew stronger & kept confounding the Jews who lived in Damascus by proving that Jesus is the Messiah. 23  After many days had passed… the Jews conspired to kill him, 24  but Saul learned of their plot. So they were watching the gates day and night intending to kill him, 25  but his disciples took him by night and lowered him in a large basket through an opening in the wall. 26  When he arrived in Jerusalem, he tried to join the disciples, but they were all afraid of him, since they did not believe he was a disciple. 27  Barnabas, however, took him & brought him to the apostles & explained to them how Saul had seen the Lord on the road & that the Lord had talked to him, & how in Damascus he had spoken boldly in the name of Jesus. 28  Saul was coming & going with them in Jerusalem, speaking boldly in the name of the Lord. 29  He conversed & debated with the Hellenistic Jews, but they tried to kill him. 30  When the brothers found out, they took him down to Caesarea & sent him off to Tarsus.

Galatians 1:17-18

17  I (Paul) did not go up to Jerusalem to those who had become apostles before me; instead, I went to Arabia and came back to Damascus. 18  Then after three years I did go up to Jerusalem to get to know Cephas, and I stayed with him fifteen days.

What’s Next?

•Saul had Met Jesus on the road to Damascus, 9:1-9
•Ananias obeyed Jesus, went to Saul, prayed for him, his sight was restored, v. 10-17
•Saul was baptized, v. 18

BUT that was ONLY the BEGINNING…

What’s Next for Saul… for US

1. Get involved with a church, 9:17-19, 25, 26-30
  • Saul was saved & baptized, v. 17-19
  • Saul was connected & involved, in Damascus,  vv. 19-21, and later in Jerusalem, vv.  26-30
  • Saul was serving with the church, v. 20, 22, 28 (Rom. 12:3-8)
  • Saul was rescued by his friends! V. 25, 30

YOU NEED THE CHURCH & THE CHURCH NEEDS YOU

2. Have a Realistic view of Discipleship, v. 21, 23-24; 26, 29
  • Some will love you some will hate you, v. 21, 29
  • Even believers may be skeptical, v. 26, 27
  • Ministry is tough and demands Courage and Sacrifice! Matt. 16:24; John 16:33; Acts 9:16; 2 Tim. 3:12; 2 Cor. 6:5-11; 11:24-29; 12: 1-11; Eph. 6:12; 1 Peter 3:13-17
    Discipleship requires SACRIFICE!
3.  Give God Time!

It has been said that there are three stages a Christian goes through:

 “This is easy!”

“This is difficult!”

 “This is impossible!”

In John 15:5 Jesus said,

“…without Me you can do NOTHING…”

  • God immediately began using Saul, 9:20
  • God took time, thorns & trials to shape Saul. 1 Tim. 3:6
    >3 Days, of blindness, 9:9, 17
    >3 Years, in Arabia 9:23/Galatians 1:17-18
    >Up to 10 Years, the Tarsus area 9:30, 11:25 & 13:1
  • God will use everything to shape you into a vessel He can use for His glory (9:16; Eph. 2:10; Rom. 8:28)

Application:

•What is NEXT FOR YOU?

  Have you Met Jesus?

  Have you been baptized?

Are you serving in a local church?

•Are you in a Small Group and Serving in a local Church?
•Are you sharing Jesus and helping others  become disciples of Jesus?
