Transformed: When Believers Disagree!

 Acts 15:1-6

1  Some men came down from Judea & began to teach the brothers: "Unless you are circumcised according to the custom prescribed by Moses, you cannot be saved." 2  After Paul & Barnabas had engaged them in serious argument & debate, Paul & Barnabas & some others were appointed to go up to the apostles & elders in Jerusalem about this issue. 3  When they had been sent on their way by the church, they passed through both Phoenicia and Samaria, describing in detail the conversion of the Gentiles, and they brought great joy to all the brothers and sisters. 4  When they arrived at Jerusalem, they were welcomed by the church, the apostles, & the elders, & they reported all that God had done with them. 5  But some of the believers who belonged to the party of the Pharisees stood up & said, "It is necessary to circumcise them & to command them to keep the law of Moses." 6  The apostles & the elders gathered to consider this matter…

When Christians Disagree!

When, not if…
What we do matters...
So what do we do?

1. Define the Issue Clearly, v. 1, 5

1  Some men came down from Judea & began to teach the brothers: "Unless you are circumcised according to the custom prescribed by Moses, you cannot be saved”…

5  But some of the believers who belonged to the party of the Pharisees stood up & said, "It is necessary to circumcise them & to command them to keep the law of Moses."

2. Talk about it Frankly, v. 2

2  After Paul & Barnabas had engaged them in serious argument & debate…” CSB
2  Paul and Barnabas disagreed with them, arguing vehemently. (NLT)

Serious argument - uproar

Debate – reasoned dispute, questioning…

3. Pray Fervently,
Luke 18:1; 1 Thes. 5:17

Nothing will drive a person to their knees in prayer faster than trouble in the family!

Acts 1:14

Acts 4:23-31, (v. 29)

Acts 6:1-7

Acts 12:5

4. Seek Godly Counsel Willingly, v. 2b; 6-17

  • Spiritual Leaders
Paul & Barnabas & some others were appointed to go up to the apostles & elders in Jerusalem about this issue.
  • The Scriptures, Amos 9:11-12

5. Listen Humbly,

v. 12, 13; James 1:19

12  The whole assembly became silent and listened to Barnabas and Paul describe all the signs and wonders God had done through them among the Gentiles. Acts 15:12 (CSB)

19  My dear brothers & sisters, understand this: Everyone should be quick to listen, slow to speak, & slow to anger, James 1:19 (CSB)

6. Decide on a Loving Course of Action, v. 19-21, 24, 25

  • There was NO compromise of Principle!
  • They chose Unity over Preference, V. 25

25 …we have unanimously decided to select men & send them to you along with our dearly loved Barnabas & Paul, Acts 15:24-25

7. Follow through Faithfully, v. 22-35

22 Then the apostles and the elders, with the whole church, decided to select men who were among them and to send them to Antioch with Paul & Barnabas: Judas, called Barsabbas, & Silas, both leading men among the brothers. 23  They wrote…

  Acts 15:22-35

Application:

  • How do you handle disagreements?
  • Will you put God’s Kingdom over yours?
  • Will you put unity over your personal preference?
  • What is God telling you to do today?
